Yankees Make Bold Move, Acquire Rockies Third Baseman Ryan McMahon in Midseason Trade

In a significant move aimed at strengthening their infield depth and offensive consistency, the New York Yankees have acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies. The trade, confirmed by sources close to ESPN on Friday, sends minor league pitchers Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz to Colorado in exchange for the veteran infielder.

The Yankees will take on the remainder of McMahon’s contract, which includes an estimated $4.5 million for the rest of the 2025 season and $32 million across the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

McMahon, 30, was an All-Star in 2024 and has become known for his strong defensive skills at third base and his consistent power at the plate. Although he is currently hitting .217 with 16 home runs and a .717 OPS in 100 games for Colorado this season, he has shown signs of heating up in recent weeks—homering in the first two games following the All-Star break and adding another long ball on Tuesday.

This move comes as the Yankees, currently battling for playoff positioning in a highly competitive American League East, look to boost their lineup ahead of the final stretch of the season. General Manager Brian Cashman has been actively exploring upgrades, and McMahon’s combination of power, experience, and contract control made him a valuable target.

For the Rockies, the trade represents a commitment to rebuilding. In return, they receive two promising young arms. Griffin Herring, a left-handed pitcher with a solid mix of velocity and command, and Josh Grosz, a right-hander showing potential in the minors, offer long-term value to Colorado's pitching development pipeline.

McMahon has hit 20 or more home runs in each of the past four seasons, and he is on pace to extend that streak once again. With his glove and bat, he is expected to immediately step into the Yankees’ starting lineup and provide both stability and pop at the hot corner.

This deal signals the Yankees' intent to go all-in on a deep playoff run and possibly return to the World Series for the first time since 2009. With McMahon now wearing pinstripes, Bronx fans have one more reason to believe.
